Subaru Forester vs. Toyota RAV4 Specs & Performance

Subaru Forester vs. Toyota RAV4 Specs & Performance

Overall, the Toyota RAV4 makes more horsepower, but the Subaru Forester gets better road grip and towing capacity, pushing it across the finish line ahead of its competitor.

The Subaru Forester comes out the gate strong with a standard 2.5-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine that makes 180 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque, standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, and a Lineartronic CVT with low shift mode. Select configurations swap out the CVT with low shift mode for a CVT with a 6-speed hybrid-type manual mode, a 7-speed manual mode, or an 8-speed manual mode. Select configurations bump the horsepower up to 182; the mild hybrid variants drop it to 162.

As far as towing goes, the Subaru Forester Wilderness reigns supreme. All configurations can tow up to 1,500 pounds,1 except the Forester Wilderness, which tows up to 3,000 pounds.1

At first glance, the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that operates the Toyota RAV4 outperforms the Subaru with 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. Its hybrid variant does the same, offering 176 horsepower, compared to the 162 of the Subaru Forester hybrid variants.

The Subaru Forester outpaces many of its competitors in towing capacity, however. The RAV4 won't tow more than 1,750 pounds,2 making it less than ideal for traveling with a pair of Jet Skis or a small trailer; and, a Subaru Forester vs. Honda HR-V comparison shows the Subaru SUV winning out over its Honda competitor, which is not rated for towing.

1Maximum towing capacity varies by trim level. Trailer brakes may be needed. See your retailer for details.

2Before towing, confirm your vehicle and trailer are compatible, hooked up and loaded properly and that you have any necessary additional equipment. Do not exceed any Weight Ratings and follow all instructions in your Owner's Manual. The maximum you can tow depends on base curb weight plus the total weight of any cargo, occupants, and added vehicle equipment. "Added vehicle equipment" includes additional standard/optional equipment and accessories added by the manufacturer, dealers, and/or vehicle owners. The only way to be certain of your vehicle's exact curb weight is to weigh your vehicle without passengers or cargo. [Calculated with the new SAE J2807 method.] Installation of a tow hitch receiver or other accessories located near the rear bumper or side-door kick sensors may require disabling or removing the kick sensor, and the sensor operation setting in your vehicle should be turned off. See Owner's Manual for limitations.
